Exploring sustainable and non-toxic natural dyeing with plants.
This is a heritage craft that was the only way to dye cloth with before William Perkin
found a way of synthesising colour in 1856.
Learn about how to grow a dye garden, plant chemistry, which plants are particularly
suitable, how to extract the pigment and how to forage from the wild in reciprocity with nature. .
The key for good dye results comes from the preparation of the fabric,
by scouring and mordanting, I will cover this and various types of dye techniques like,
bundle dyeing, hapazome, immersion dyeing, Shibori and how to modify colours with iron,
acids and alkalis. These teachings can be delivered over several days for a
more deeper study, or just one technique to understand some basics during one day.
